About

About The Fresnel Post

An independent editorial journal dedicated to lighthouse engineering and keeper history — written from sources, not from legends.

Coastal engineering, optics and the working lives of lighthouse keepers are subjects surrounded by more mythology than most. Famous towers attract tall tales, incorrect dates circulate for decades, and the same handful of anecdotes get recycled until they harden into "facts." The Fresnel Post exists to do the slower thing: read the records, cite them, and tell the history that holds up.

What we cover

The site is organized into five sections: Optics & Illumination (lenses, fuels and light characteristics), Towers & Engineering (foundations, materials and famous builds), Keepers & Logs (the documented lives of station staff), Signals & Sound (fog signals, lightships, daymarks and navigational paperwork), and Preservation & Legacy (restoration, funding and what happens when lights are retired).

Who it is for

Readers with an informational interest in maritime history and engineering: students, museum and preservation volunteers, coastal visitors who want more than a postcard caption, and anyone who has ever wondered why a lens floats in a bath of mercury. We do not sell equipment, book tours or accept placements; nothing on this site is commercial advice.

How we work

Every article is desk research built on opened sources — official agencies (such as the National Park Service, the US Coast Guard Historian's Office, Trinity House and the Northern Lighthouse Board), museum archives, engineering institutions and peer-reviewed or professional publications. Claims involving dates, numbers or disputed events are checked against at least two independent sources. Each article ends with a visible Sources box listing the exact pages used and the date we accessed them. Our full method is described in Sources & Methodology and the rules we hold ourselves to in Editorial Standards.

Independence and business model

The Fresnel Post is an independent publication. It currently displays no advertising and carries no affiliate links or sponsored content. Editorial decisions are made independently. If our business model changes, we will disclose it clearly on this page before the change takes effect.

Who runs it and how to reach us

The site is published by Fresnel Post Editorial, an independent editorial operation. Corrections and factual challenges are genuinely welcome — that is how the record improves. Write to [email protected] for editorial matters, [email protected] for privacy requests and [email protected] for copyright complaints. Our Contact page lists every channel, and our Corrections Policy explains what happens after you write.
